Dallas ISD Announces Remote Professional Development Day, November 7

The Dallas Independent School District (Dallas ISD) has announced its plans for the final professional development day of the fall semester, which is scheduled to take place remotely on Tuesday, November 7. This day, dedicated to professional development, will see campuses closed and non-teaching staff members taking part in training modules remotely under the guidance of their respective supervisors or departments.

The Dallas ISD’s move towards a digital platform for professional development is a growing trend among education providers. The November 7 professional development day will be considered a regular workday for central employees working on calendars that include 226 or more work days. Campus exempt employees, on the other hand, have until that day to complete their designated remote training modules. These modules, assigned by their principals, will be a mix of asynchronous and live virtual sessions.

Non-exempt employees, who are paid on an hourly basis, have a slightly different set of requirements. They are required to accumulate eight hours of compensatory time between October 1 and October 31. This can be achieved by completing the assigned asynchronous training outside their regular duty hours but before November 7.

Compensatory time is time worked beyond an employee’s regular schedule, which can be used to cover absences in the future. The amount of compensatory time needed to cover the professional development day can be calculated using a table provided by Dallas ISD or via a link provided to the employees.

On the professional development day itself, non-exempt team members will not have the option to sign in and out. If they have not accumulated the necessary compensatory time, they will need to use their Paid Time Off (PTO). Exempt employees, too, will need to complete their assigned modules by November 7. Failure to do so will result in the use of PTO.

The Professional and Digital Learning teams at Dallas ISD are currently developing a range of modules for non-teaching employees. These modules will be accessible via Cornerstone, a leading learning management system.
