Work-Life Balance Tops Priority List for Singapore Workers: Survey

Work-life balance has emerged as the top priority for Singaporean employees, according to a recent survey, with professional development also ranking high on the list. This four-part survey conducted by Reeracoen in July and August 2023 aimed to uncover the career aspirations and expectations of Singapore’s workforce in light of the country’s changing economic landscape.

The initial segment of the survey, titled “What Singapore workers want,” revealed that 47% of the 293 participants expressed a strong preference for a balanced work-life equation. In contrast, the ability to work remotely was a priority for 26% of respondents. Four-day workweeks were preferred by 19%, while professional development was important for 8%.

The second part of the survey, which involved 424 participants, reinforced these findings. Work-life balance remained the top choice for respondents, with 57% citing it as their primary concern. Intriguingly, monetary compensation surpassed remote work in this segment of the survey, with 25% of respondents identifying it as a key motivator. Remote work was chosen by 10%, and a four-day workweek by 8%.

The final two segments of the survey explored salary expectations and potential job changes. From the 425 respondents, 54% anticipated a salary increase of between 6% and 10% within the year. Meanwhile, 28% expected a raise of between 1% and 5%, 13% anticipated their salary would remain unchanged, and a small percentage (5%) expected a decrease in their pay.

When considering job changes, out of 445 respondents, a significant majority (73%) expressed an intention to change jobs. The remaining respondents were undecided (12%), not considering a change (12%), or unsure (3%).

Reeracoen’s Group CEO Kenji Naito commented on the survey results, suggesting that Singaporean employees value time and financial rewards highly when considering employment options. He noted that the workforce’s aspiration for improved work-life balance and better financial compensation underscores the urgent need for companies to prioritize employee well-being and offer competitive remuneration packages.

This survey’s findings underscore the critical importance of professional development, which can be facilitated by CPD accreditation. CPD accreditation can provide a structured approach to learning and development, helping employees achieve their career goals while maintaining a healthy work-life balance. For educational providers, understanding how to get CPD accredited can be a valuable step in supporting the professional development needs of today’s workforce.

They are willing to change jobs and expect competitive remuneration packages that reflect their skills and experience.
