CPD certificates for engineering training providers
If you teach structural, civil, mechanical, electrical or energy engineers, you can issue your own CPD certificates. Engineering institutions ask members to plan and record their professional development, and they do not run a list of approved courses. A certificate that states the technical outcomes and can be verified online is what an engineer needs for that record.
Do engineering CPD courses need outside approval?
In most cases, no. UK institutions such as the ICE, IMechE and IET ask members to record learning against their own development plans. Regulators in Canada and Australia set hour expectations but leave the choice of course to the engineer. Some provincial regulators count hours by type of activity, which makes a clear statement of hours and content on the certificate even more useful.
Specialist engineering educators, with deep technical content and a practitioner audience, are already producing exactly the learning these schemes want to see.
What should an engineering CPD certificate show?
The topic, the hours and the technical outcomes: for example, design a reinforced concrete beam to Eurocode 2, or size cables for a commercial installation. Specific outcomes help the engineer map the learning to a competence standard and help an auditor see its relevance at a glance.
Why does this suit online engineering course libraries?
Many engineering educators sell large libraries of short technical courses to an international audience. Issuing a certificate per course by hand does not scale. Open CPD issues a branded certificate automatically when a learner passes the final quiz, with no per-course fee, so adding the fiftieth course costs the same as adding the first.
How a technical course library issues certificates at scale
An online provider sells a library of short engineering courses, each ending in a multiple-choice exam, to engineers in the UK, Canada and Australia.
- 1Course: structural steel connection design
- 4 hours
- 2Pass mark on the final exam
- 70%
- 3Course profile with aims, skills and outcomes
- Written once per course
- 4Learner passes the exam on the course platform
- Triggers the certificate
- 5Certificate, badge and verification page created
- Within minutes
Result: every passing engineer receives a 4-hour CPD certificate naming the design skills covered, ready to log with their institution or regulator.
How do certificates reach your learners?
Connect your course platform through Zapier or Zoho Flow, or use the Open CPD API if you run your own system, so certificates issue when a learner passes. For live webinars and in-person courses, one CSV upload covers the whole group. You pay per certificate issued, with no per-course fee.

Questions engineering training providers ask
Will ICE, IMechE or IET accept my course for CPD?
UK engineering institutions ask members to record CPD that supports their development plan. They do not pre-approve individual courses. A certificate that states the technical outcomes and hours of your course is strong evidence for that record.
Do certificates work for engineers in Canada and Australia?
Yes. Provincial regulators in Canada and Engineers Australia expect engineers to log CPD hours and keep evidence. A certificate with the hours, the outcomes and a verification link meets that need. Engineers should still check how their own regulator categorises each activity.
Can certificates be issued only when a learner passes the exam?
Yes. When your course platform records a pass, it can trigger the certificate automatically through Zapier, Zoho Flow or the Open CPD API. Learners who have not passed receive nothing until they do.
Can I issue CPD certificates for engineering courses myself?
Yes. Any education provider can issue CPD certificates for its own courses. With Open CPD they carry your branding, the course outcomes, the hours and a unique verification ID, and you can describe them as powered by Open CPD.
