For translation and interpreting trainers

CPD certificates for translation and interpreting training providers

If you train translators or interpreters, through courses, webinars, mentoring or exam preparation, you can issue your own CPD certificates. Linguists log CPD with bodies such as CIOL, ITI and ATA, and those bodies look for relevant learning, not a particular accreditation logo. A certificate with clear outcomes and an online verification link gives them what they need.

Who recognises CPD for translators and interpreters?

Professional bodies such as the Chartered Institute of Linguists (CIOL), the Institute of Translation and Interpreting (ITI) and the American Translators Association (ATA) expect members to keep their skills current and to record it. Interpreters working in public service or court settings often need evidence of ongoing training to stay on registers and agency panels.

None of these bodies requires every course to be pre-approved by an outside accreditor. That gives specialist trainers room to issue their own certificates, as long as the learning is clear.

What should a translator's CPD certificate include?

The language pair or specialism where relevant, the topic, the hours, and the aims, skills and outcomes. A medical interpreting terminology course, a legal translation workshop and a CAT tools webinar each build different skills, and saying so on the certificate helps the linguist show relevance.

A verification link turns the certificate into something an agency or client can check in seconds, which matters in a profession built on trust.

Why does this suit small linguist training businesses?

Many translation and interpreting academies are run by one or two working linguists, selling courses and mentoring to a global audience. Open CPD issues branded certificates and digital badges automatically, so the trainer gets a professional result without building anything.

Worked example

How an interpreter mentoring programme becomes a CPD certificate

An academy runs an eight-week online programme for community interpreters, mixing live practice and recorded teaching.

1Eight recorded terminology and ethics lessons
8 hours
2Four live consecutive interpreting practice sessions
6 hours
3Self-assessment and feedback on a recorded role play
2 hours
4Course profile records aims, skills and outcomes once
Reused each cohort
5Certificate and badge issued at the end of the programme
One CSV upload

Result: a 16-hour CPD certificate that names the skills practised, with a verification link the interpreter can share with agencies.

How do certificates reach your learners?

Upload a CSV at the end of a cohort, or connect platforms such as Teachable, Thinkific or Kajabi through Zapier or Zoho Flow so certificates go out as learners finish. Certificates can be multilingual, and each has a permanent verification page. You pay per certificate issued, with no per-course fee.

Questions translation and interpreting trainers ask

Will CIOL or ITI accept CPD certificates from my course?

CIOL and ITI ask members to record CPD that maintains or develops their professional skills. They do not require courses to be approved in advance. A certificate setting out the aims, skills, outcomes and hours of your course is good evidence for that record.

Can US translators use my certificate for ATA continuing education?

ATA-certified translators log continuing education points for relevant learning. A certificate showing the topic, hours and a verification link helps them document it. Check the current ATA rules for how points are calculated for each type of activity.

Can the certificate be in a language other than English?

Yes. Open CPD supports multilingual certificates, so the course title and outcomes can appear in the language your learners work in.

Can I issue CPD certificates for translation courses myself?

Yes. Any training provider can issue CPD certificates for its own courses. With Open CPD they carry your branding, the course outcomes, the hours and a unique verification ID, and you can describe them as powered by Open CPD.
